Care For and Train Your Friendly Birds

Living With Companion Birds

Friendly Birds has all the bird resources you need

Information and resources on companion birds.

This site is for bird lovers.
My kids and I have a passion for our pet birds and have been researching and devouring bird videos and parrot courses for a couple of years now. We decided to put the site friendlybirds together so we could help other bird owners find some of the cool bird resources that we know about. So at friendlybirds.com you will discover all kinds of helpful information about parrots and other pet birds.Whether your thinking about buying your first parrot or you have kept companion birds your whole life and are just looking for information to help you take the best care of your birds that you can have come to the right place
We have compiled everything from how to hand rear a baby bird and teach it to talk to training parrots to do cool tricks. I dont think is cruel or mean to teach your bird new things, they love it, it builds the bond between you and keeps their minds healthy, To a pet bird its much better to be actively learning new things than to be stuck in a cage all day every day.
Now If you have a naughty bird and struggling with a badly behaved parrot then you just need some help so we have found the best free and paid bird advice and parrot resources to help solve your bird related problems right here to help you!

The kids and I will be expanding this site over the coming weeks and months to make sure that it is the best bird site online providing you with everything from bird diet and parrot nutrition information to tips on teaching your bird new tricks and getting them to talk whistle and sing with joy.

If you have an unhappy anti social bird all is not lost as you can fix all kinds of behavior problems even if you have a parrot who bites, screams and won’t let you touch or pick it up and turn your nasty bird completely around and into a friendly bird who wants your attention, steps up onto your finger and lets you scratch and pet them. There is nothing like a companion bird who loves you and does little tricks, talks, sings or whistles and mimics other sounds around your house. Parrots have so much personality that once you really get to know and understand their needs they really will will love you back unconditionally and you will love them like a treasured child. Parrots also make wonderful friends and life long companions because they do have long life spans and will probably out live most adults who get a new baby parrot or young bird, something to be considered when choosing your first parrot.

So to point you in the right direction from the start make sure your aware of the absolute best bird training taming and tricks material available online. There is no question in my mind as to what site is the best resource for bird courses, videos and resources and that is the material produced by the famous bird trainers and experts the Womachs. Chet Womach is probably the best guy on the planet to learn things from about pet birds and his product range is what I consider to be the absolute best in bird training and taming materials and their website the most professionally run pet bird site online, I mean it , I am a dedicated and loyal member of this Bird Tricks site and have purchased all of their bird courses, parrot training dvds, bird books and even the natural bird toys. Friendly Birds Parrot Club

Taking care of a companion birds and parrots is much more involved than simply giving Polly a cracker when she asks for it.

Andrew McMullen’s goal with the Friendly Birds Parrot Club located in Western Australia is to build a community to support, educate and enlighten others about parrots and companion birds.

“Re-homing parrots has gotten out of control,” Mr McMullen said. “It used to be a large parrot would cost anywhere from $3,000 -$20,000. Now you can get birds for $50 or even for free on Gumtree.”

This accessibility of parrot ownership is causing the birds to suffer the consequences of poor conditions and misinformation. Since some parrots can live for 90-120 years, they can be re-homed multiple times in their lifetime. Sometimes the individual bird and new owner are an ill-suited match.

“People are treating these animals like they’re not a big deal, but they are,” Mr McMullen said. “They must be treated with respect.”

Mr McMullen has had companion birds as pets since he was 3 years old, and currently has three birds of his own.

JoJo, The Cockatiel; Pedro, a Pink and Grey Galah; and Sunny, a Jenday Conure, all add color and personality to the McMullen’s life.

“They are too smart for their own good,” Mr McMullen joked.

He said that many people think they are “easier to care for than a cat or a dog,” but that’s not always true and cockatoos and parrots are not for everyone. “They offer a different kind of interaction than other kinds of pets,” he said.

McMullen’s most important goal with the Friendly Birds Parrot Club is to raise awareness.

“I want people to know that we’re here,” he said. “There is a huge community of people who have companion birds and we can support one another.”

“The Friendly Birds Parrot Club is dedicated to the education of our members and our community on the care of companion birds,” said the group’s mission statement. “This goal is accomplished through guest speakers, informational tools, a bird rehoming service and the sharing of information among our members.”

Club meetings feature visits from avian veterinarians and bird experts as guest speakers, to answer questions and educate.

“It doesn’t cost anything to be a member,” Mr McMullen said.

A larger goal involves MR McMullen’s efforts to open a bird sanctuary. The blueprints are being drawn up. Now the hard work begins to find an appropriate plot of land, gain non-profit status and get volunteers on board to make the dream a reality.

This would be one of only a handful of parrot sanctuaries in the country.

“I would like to break ground in a year,” Mr McMullen said. “This is a place where a bird can be a bird, where the community, school groups and parrot lovers can see them more in their own habitat.”

If interested in joining the Friendly Birds Parrot Club or in helping the WA Bird Sanctuary to take flight, contact Mr McMullen at http://friendlybirds.com/contact , or like the Friendly Birds Parrot Club on Facebook.

Australian Wild Bird Rescue Resources

What to do if you find an injured or abandoned Wild Bird in Australia

First you need to check that the bird really is injured or abandoned. In the nesting season, birds that have recently fledged (left the nest) are sometimes found on the ground while their parent(s) are nearby feeding. The bird might look abandoned, but often it isn’t. If the baby is feathered, it’s best to leave the bird alone and watch discretely from a distance to see if the parent birds return. If the parent’s don’t appear, call your local wildlife rescue organisation and give them a description of the bird – they will be able to provide you with further advice depending on the species of bird and where it is.

If you find a bird that has been injured, or really has been abandoned, you need to keep it safe, quiet, still and warm while you seek further advice. The best way to do this is to loosely wrap the bird in a towel and gently place it in a secure and well-ventilated box. Place the box away from noise, pets, children or other disturbances. Do not attempt to feed the bird. Contact your local wildlife rescue organisation who will be able to provide further advice.

If you find a sick or injured wild animal, contact your nearest veterinarian or wildlife carer organisation as soon as possible so that it may receive appropriate treatment.  Wild animals become stressed by handling, so you should seek expert advice before handling an injured animal. Try to minimise the amount of exposure the injured animal has to people and loud noises. Do not attempt to feed or treat it unless you have specialist knowledge or training.
